*Data Types
^PLAYER INFORMATION}
This data type contains all personal information for each player
in a league such as name, address, height, weight etc. You may also
define 5 pieces of information you may need but are not included as
defaults in the program when you first set up your league.
|
^PLAYER STATISTICS - TOTALS}
This data type will contain each players total stats as they are
accumulated throughout the season. Each different database will
contain it's own totals. The TOTAL STATS DATABASE will contain the
totals of the other 5 databases.
|
^PLAYER STATISTICS - INDIVIDUALS}
This data type will contain each players stats for EVERY game he
played during the season. For example if JOE PLAYER played in 123
games during the season he will have 123 seperate individuals. When
viewing this data type all individuals may be compressed (see data
compression) which combines all players with the same name into 1
line on the screen.
{NOTE :}Individuals will only be tracked if data is entered in
^GAMEMODE.
|
^GAMES STATISTICS}
This data type will contain a teams total stats for each game
played (the sum of all individuals for each game). When viewing
this data type all game stats may be compressed (see data com-
pression) which combines all games with the same common opponent.
|
^STANDINGS}
This data type will contain a teams win-loss record plus lots
of other data. The total of all a teams statistics are also in-
cluded in this data type.
*Sorting data
^SORTING DATA}{F5}
Select the data on which you want to sort from the sort selection
box. The program will select the logical order in which to sort
based on the data you chose. Press{Y}to sort in the order that the
program selected or{N}to sort the opposite way.
*Qualifying data
^QUALIFYING DATA}{F8}
Select the data on which you want to qualify from the qualifying se-
lection box. If the data you select requires a string input (names,
opponents,etc) then you will be presented a box in which to input
the qualifying string. Upper and lower case letters are always treat-
ed the same. You can also find multiple matches by entering a part-
ial string. For example to qualify by name:
Enter {m} or {M} and press F10 to include all players whose name
begins with a M.
Entering {mi} or {MI} will only include those players whose name
begins with MI.
|
If the data you select is a statistic you will then be asked to en-
ter the minimum value to qualify. For example to qualify players by
^AT BATS (AB)}:
Press{F8}to bring up the qualifying box. Select At Bats. Enter
the least amount of at bats that a player must have to qualify
for the report.
If you only want to include players with 10 or more at bats, you
would enter 10 then press{F10}to accept the data. Players with
9 or less at bats will be removed from the report. Pressing{F10}
while viewing reports will restore all the original players. If
you want to include just the players with 10 or less at bats you
would enter -10 instead of 10, then players with 11 or more at
bats would be removed. By combining the 2 methods you can achieve
a complete range of qualifications.
*Display selection
^SELECT DISPLAY}{F6}
Press{F6}to select a different display. If you chose default
displays from the main title bar you will only be able to
choose from the default displays. If you started with custom
displays you can only choose from custom displays. To switch
the type of display (custom or default) press{ESC}and select
VIEW from the main title bar.
*Resetting display
^RESET DISPLAY}{F10}
Pressing{F10}at anytime while viewing data will reset all data
that was present when you first loaded the data from disk. If
you simply choose a different display the present data will
remain untouched.
*Mailing lists
^MAILING LISTS}{F9}
You may print mailing labels for all qualified players by
pressing{F9}when the data type in memory is ^PERSONAL IN-
FORMATION}only. If the current print driver if anything
other than GENERIC you will also be asked if you want the
labels to be printed in Near Letter Quality.
*Data Compression
^DATA COMPRESSION
Data compression{F9}when used with qualifying data{F8}allows you
to create reports that would normally be very tedious and time
consumming. The easiest way to show how data compression works
is by example. In the following example will we show you how to
find JOE PLAYERS batting average for day games played at home
against right handed starters in the month of June. The next
screen will show you JOE'S original individual data when it was
first loaded into memory from disk. The display shows only data
that is critical to this example.

First we have to qualify JOE'S data according to the keys
we already decided on. They are:
^ HOME/AWAY} We want only home games.
^ RIGHT/LEFT} We want only the games started by right handers.
^ DAY/NIGHT} We want only day games.
^ DATE} We want only the games played in june.
We could qualify the 4 keys in any order so lets just use the
order listed above. The first key is HOME/AWAY so press{F8} to
bring up the qualification selection box. Move the highlighted
cursor to {H/A Home or Away} and press enter. Press {H} for
home games. All away games will now be eliminated from the re-
port and the report will now look like the following screen.

You may think well big deal I could do that by myself. But what
if JOE played in a hundred games and what about the other 19 play-
ers on the team. If all 20 players played in 100 games you would
have 2000 lines on the original report. Wouldn't it be nice to have
just 20 lines, one for each player. That exactly what you would get
in the preceding example. As you can see the possibilities from us-
ing data compression are endless. The date, H/A, D/N/ and R/L fields
used in the above example wouldn't even have to be displayed on the
report since all the qualifying keys will be shown on the Qualifying
Status line of the report. You could even compress the data without
any qualifications which would give you the same report as loading
player totals instead of individuals.
*Top Ten Report
{TOP TEN REPORTS}
Press F9 to view or print a top ten report for EVERY player total
statistic contained in BallStat Pro (102 top ten reports). The re-
ports are divided into 4 different groups which you may switch be-
tween by pressing a single key. When you first enter the Top 10 re-
port the BATTING group will be displayed and ready to print. The next
group will be shown in the lower right hand corner of the screen,
just press the highlighted letter to switch to the group shown. The
order of the groups are BATTING, PITCHING, FIELDING and USER-DEFINED.
You may press any of the following keys to move around or print any
of the reports.
|
{RIGHT-ARROW}will display the next statistic on the screen.
{LEFT-ARROW}will display the previous statistic on the screen.
Press{S}to switch the sort order (ascending or descending)
Press{R}to send the currently displayed stat to the printer.
Press{A}to send the whole group to the printer.
Press{T}to send the currently displayed stat to a file.
Press{O}to send the whole group to a file.
Press the highlighted letter in the lower right click box to dis-
play the next group.
Press{ESC}to quit the top ten screen.
|
All stats will be sorted by the logical order of that stat. For
example AT BATS will be sorted in descending order, ERA in ascend-
ing order and so forth. To skip a stat (not print it) use the 'R'
or 'T' keys to send only the stats you want to the printer or file.
Printing to a file is recommeded for long reports, then dump the
whole file to the printer at once. If you use a different file name
each time you can keep as many top ten reports as you like. Rememb-
er also that by printing to a file you can insert any text you like
anywhere in the report by using your favorite text editorbefore send-
ing the report to the printer.
*Printing Reports
{Print report to printer}
Use this option to send the currently displayed report
to your printer. Make sure the paper is aligned before
selecting this option.
{Print report to File}
This option will send the report to a disk file instead
of the printer. The name of the file will be BB.RPT un-
less you select or create a different file. Printing to a
file allows you to speed up the process of printing many
different reports. Each new report will be appended to the
end of the file allowing you to print all your reports at
once instead of waiting because of slow printer output.
Printing to a file also has the major advantage of allow-
ing you to change or insert new text in the file using most
word processors before printing.
|
{Create report file name}
This option allows to to create a new file name to send
your reports to. After creating a new file the new file will
automatically be selected as the report file in use. You may
create as many printer files as you like.
{Select report file Name}
Use this option to select a file to send reports to from
all the previous files you may have created.
{Send report file to printer}
This option will send the currently selected file to the
printer. After printing all your reports to the selected
file you can send them to the printer all at once instead
of one at a time.
{Add printer driver}
This option allows you to create a new printer driver
without returning to the main title bar.
|
{Select printer driver}
Use this option to select a new printer driver.
{Send Control code to printer}
With this option you can send any escape sequence you like
to the printer. Enter the DECIMAL codes in the spaces pro-
vided and press F10 to send them to the printer.
{Reset Printer}
This option will reset your printer to it's default state
if you created a driver for your printer and entered the
necessary codes. Note that this option will not work when
using the GENERIC driver.
{Send Form Feed}
This will send a form feed (12) to your printer. You may
wish to do this after each individual report.
{Send Line Feed}
This will send a line feed (10) to your printer. You may
wish to do this to seperate individual report.
|
{Create Custom Header File}
A custom header file is the file that will contain all the
custom headers that you create. Each time you create a new
custom header it will be saved to the custom header file that
is currently in use. You may create as many custom header
files as you wish.
{Enter Custom Header}
Create a custom header to describe the report you are about
to print. The custom header will appear as the very first line
in the report you are about to print. For example a custom
header may be : STATS FOR 01/01/94 to 01/31/94
You may create as many as 600 custom headers for each custom
header file.
{Select Custom Header}
Use this option to select a previously created custom head-
er. You can only select from the currently specified custom
header file.
|
{Select Custom Header File}
Use this option to select which custom header file you want
to use. Remember that a custom header file contains the cus-
tom headers that you already created.
{Select Line Seperator}
This option allows you to choose the type of solid line used
when printing reports.
{Exit}
Use this option to exit the print menu. The currently select-
ed custom header will be de-selected when you exit the print
menu.
*Method to calculate AVG =
Use this option to tell BallStat which way you want the program
to calculate a pitchers AVG (opponents batting average). The de-
fault setting is estimate ( [ HITS / (INNINGS PITCHED * 3 + HITS ]
+ AN ADJUSTMENT OF .014 ). If you want to calculate the actual
batting average against a pitcher then you must keep track of the
opponents actual AT BATS against the pitcher.
*Two color stat display =
When viewing data on the screen with the VIEW menu you may use
this option to toggle between having all lines the same color or
having every other line a different color.
*Default Database =
Use this option to select a default database to use instead of
selecting one from a menu each time. For example if you are only
entering regular season games then select regular season games
from the menu here. Now each time you go to load, edit or create
data the regular season database willed be used automatically.
*Full Information Box =
Use this option to toggle between a full information box and a
partial information box. The partial box will display limited
information but you may find the screen easier to read.
*Enable short cut keys =
Use this option to disable the use of the short cut keys if you
find that you sometimes hit them accidently.
*Show Time =
This option toggles the time on and off. When set to on the time
will be displayed in the upper right hand corner of every screen.
*Delete Macro
Use this option to delete unwanted macros that you no longer need.
*Location of game Alt+L
Use this option to enter the locations of all the ball fields in
you league. Any field entered here will be selectable from a menu
when you enter game information, saving you the time of having to
type the location in each time.
*Macros
Macros are used when viewing data in memory. Use macros to
remember qualifications. For example if you use 6 different
qualifications on the data in memory, you can record all six
qualifications and assign a macro name to them. The next time
you need only to select the macro name instead of going thru
all 6 qualifying steps.
{F7}
Use this key to begin or end macro recording of qualifying sta-
tus. When turned on, every time you qualify data in memory the
qualifications will be stored until you either press F7 again or
press F10 to reset all data in memory. If you press F7 to stop
recording macros you will be asked to supply a file name for the
macro. Type in a descriptive name for the file and press F10 to
save the macro to disk. There is no limit to the number of qual-
ifications that can be contained in each macro.
{TAB}
Press the tab key to use a qualifying macro that you previously
saved to disk. The data in memory will be instantly qualified by
all qualifications contained in the macro and the qualifying titles
will be displayed on the screen.
*Data compression
Individuals and game totals can be compressed to allow you to dis-
play complex data situations. Individuals will usually be compressed
according to a players name. Game totals are usually compressed ac-
cording to the opponents name. Data compression combined with the qual-
ifying function allows you to compute complex statistics just like the
pros. Below are some examples of BATTING AVERAGES that can be computed
with the qualifying and data compression function.
|
BATTING AVERAGE
BATTING AVERAGE IN HOME GAMES
BATTING AVERAGE IN AWAY GAMES
BATTING AVERAGE AGAINST RH PITCHERS
BATTING AVERAGE AGAINST LH PITCHERS
BATTING AVERAGE FOR DAY GAMES
BATTING AVERAGE FOR NIGHT GAMES
BATTING AVERAGE IN JUNE
BATTING AVERAGE IN JULY
BATTING AVERAGE FOR HOME GAMES PLAYED IN JULY
BATTING AVERAGE FOR HOME GAMES PLAYED DURING THE DAY IN JULY
BATTING AVERAGE FOR AWAY GAMES PLAYED AT NIGHT ON GRASS IN JULY
AGAINST RIGHT HANDED PITCHERS IN WHICH THE BATTER HAD MORE
THAN 1 HIT AND COMMITTED AT LEAST ONE ERROR!
I think you can get the picture, the possibilities are unlimited!
There are literally thousands of batting averages you could compute
PLUS you can do the same thing for every other statistic AND it's
quick and easy to do!
*Toggle GameMode
Use this option to toggle between GameMode and BulkMode.
*Display game Totals
When this option is ON then the totals for the game will be dis-
played as each players stats are saved to disk. Use this option to
toggle this feature on and off.
*Turn Speed Key
When SpeedKey is turned on you can only enter one digit (0-9) for
each field before automatically advancing to the next field. This
will make data entry much quicker. When off you must press enter to
advance to the next field each time. Use this option to toggle the
SpeedKey feature on and off.
*Individuals
INDIVIDUALS are what gives BallStat Pro it's power. INDIVIDUALS
are a players stats for EACH game he plays. Along with a players
stats the program saves certain game conditions (home, away, date,
night etc) also. Combined with the qualifying function and data
compression you now have the tools to create even the most complex
statistics. Create a test league and experiment with the 3 elements
mentioned (INDIVIDUALS, QUALIFYING STATUS and DATA COMPRESSION) and
you will soon be able to use the full power of BallStat Pro.
